Treatment methods

The normal course of treatment of yeast infections is by inserting medicines in the affected areas, which are normally creams applied to the vaginal areas with the help of applicators, or suppositories that can be left in the vagina to dissolve on their own. Other available forms of yeast infection medication can be creams, which can be applied on the vulva to help relieve itching, or pills which can be taken by mouth.

The treatment for such infections is generally by tropical or anti-fungal medications. But many people prefer using the home remedies for these infections. Not because the cost of medication is high, but because the methods are more natural.

Yeast Infection home remedies
Yeast infection home remedies are simple and cost effective. You can use day to day utilies as natural medications for the best results. Some yeast infection home remedies include:

  • Insert plain yogurt with a cream applicator. Insert at night and wear a pad. Repeat for three to seven nights, until symptoms disappear.
  • Douching with yogurt and water can help, too. I
Paint the vagina, cervix and vulva with gentian violet. It stains so you'll want to wear a pad. This usually works after one treatment.
  • Insert a garlic suppository. Carefully peel one clove of garlic. Wrap in gauze and insert into the vagina. Leave in for up to twelve hours.
  •  Drinking unsweetened cranberry juice is recommended.
  • Insert Potassium Sorbate. This is used in home beer-making and can be found at wine-making stores. Dip a cotton tampon into a 3% solution (15 grams of Potassium Sorbate in one pint of water) and insert into the vagina at night. Remove in the morning.
  • Drink or eat Acidophilus. It's available in powder or capsules in health food stores or found in some milk and yogurt products. (Read the label; some dairy products have added acidophilus.)
  • Douche with a vinegar/water solution. One tablespoon of vinegar to one quart of water, once a day. Especially effective when used with yogurt suppositories.
  • Lightly crushed cloves of garlic, which yield allicin, an antifungal agent.
  •  Boric Acid has also been used to treat yeast infections (by inserting gelcaps filled with boric acid powder into the vagina at bedtime for three to four consecutive nights).
  • Eating a diet consisting primarily of green, fresh, raw vegetables also may give relief.
  • Other alternative treatments consist in consuming a fermented beverage called Kefir.

While yeast infection home remedies may offer relief in minor cases of the infection, it is advisable to seek medical attention, especially if you are unable to judge the extent of the infection.Treating yeast infections solely with medication may not give desired results, and other underlying causes require consideration.
